About the Victoria Foundation
The Victoria Foundation provides leadership by inspiring giving, by thoughtfully caring for the assets entrusted to us, and be investing in people, ideas and activities that strengthen our communities.
Purpose
The Victoria Foundation exercises leadership to support nonprofit organizations through both action and charitable giving, and we strive to maintain prudent financial management of endowed assets so that our donors' legacies are respected in perpetuity.
As an organization we identify areas in need of support and makes grants to vital local registered charities operating within these needs. These areas include arts, culture and heritage, community services, environment, and health and recreation.
Endowment
Through Hosted Organization Endowment Funds the Victoria Foundation is able to assist charitable organizations in accumulating endowments that can subsequently generate operating funds and provide a sense of continuance and security. Donors understand that their gifts will be held in perpetuity, while the annual distributions provide ongoing support to the charities.
History
In 2011, the Victoria Foundation celebrates its 75th anniversary. Since 1936, the generosity and commitment of donors has enabled the Victoria Foundation to fulfill its vision of connecting people who care with causes that matter. The connections that the Foundation has with the charitable sector make us the go to resource centre for community philanthropy and they allow us to respond to the needs in our community through leadership, stewardship and granting.
Established through an Act of the BC Legislature during the Depression, the Foundation received its very first gift of $20 in 1937 from Mrs. Fannie Gadsden, the mother of Foundation founder, Burges Gadsden. After a long period of dormancy, the Foundation began actively granting in 1969. Since those early days, the Victoria Foundation has grown to over $180 million in total assets under management and in 2010 provided grants totaling more than $9.7 million.
